Gratta needs no wall and no drilling. It stands on its own with real stability, an elongated wooden frame holding a cardboard scratch surface that invites a cat to stretch out to full length while it claws. Studio Nooi added a gentle dip in the middle, so the same board becomes a cozy nook for lounging or a nap when the scratching is done.
The cardboard insert is replaceable and eco-friendly, and the lacquered wood frame comes in three finishes to suit the room. Swap the insert when it wears, keep the frame.
A German design house
MiaCara is a family run German label from Herzogenaurach, started by Sebastian and Barbara Zweig. It began with their Labrador, Cara, who turned her nose up at a cheap foam cushion, and grew into a full design house that launched its cat line in 2015. The credo is form follows function, innovate rather than imitate, so every piece is drawn to work first and then to sit quietly in a room.
Made in Europe, made to last
Most of the range is manufactured in Germany and Europe from hand picked suppliers, under fair conditions and short transport routes. MiaCara leans on recycled materials wherever it can: felt spun from recycled PET bottles, recycled aluminium, recycled foam, and fabric made from upcycled ocean plastic through the Seaqual initiative. Packaging is FSC certified or recycled, and the workshop has run on certified green electricity since 2021.
Award winning design
MiaCara's work has been recognised with design awards, among them a German Design Award and a Red Dot, and each piece is credited to the studio or designer behind it.
A scratcher that doubles as somewhere to flop is smart with floor space, and Gratta manages it without a single wall anchor. The swappable insert is what keeps it around for years.
